The Vaso Credenza featured on Apartment Therapy is made from Dyed Cherry, Beveled Glass Insert, with Brushed Nickel Hardware
Aparment Therapy featured Art’s work and the Vaso Credenza as part of their “green week.” Apparently they not only dig Art’s style, but also his commitment to using as much of the wood as possible and limited use of power tools. We acknowledge the occasional power drill or sander, but trust me most of the work is done with little hand planes and elbow grease.
We think that if Apartment Therapy liked the Vaso Credenza they should check out the Lux Prunus Corner Cabinet.

And, of course, if those speak to you — you should definitely check out the amazing Atomic Table!

The Atomic Table is handcrafted and made from maple with a pickled finish and a glass top.

I find one of the most satisfying parts of woodworking is the planning. I love sketching, designing, making small models, and working drawings; it gives me control of the subject and provides a base to go back to when problems arise.
For this piece I abandoned that process entirely.
I took four pieces of Black Walnut from a friend’s farm and left them on my porch with little idea of what they would become. The pieces were debris from land clearing; split from the main trunks of trees by a bulldozer.
It appeared at first that they would become part of a new handrail and banister for my own home. When I stood one of the pieces up, I realized that it had the perfect shape for a chair back. I played around with the pieces some more and realized that all of them could conceivably become a chair.
I saw a ladder-back chair with a seat made of some sort of webbing. Once I started cutting I went from four legs to three, and bent Cherry side rail become Walnut. The seat became solid, then flat, and then a gently concave row of Apple and Peach twigs from my garden.
It was a different, more intuitive and organic process for me. I believe that this is shown in the work’s sculptural lines and naturalistic feel.

And You Thought That Coco could be devious….

After six-and-a-half years, I finally made a piece of furniture which could not go down the stairs.
I took out the bedroom window and shoved the 40″ by 45″ by 23″ Oak cabinet out onto the roof and then down to the sidewalk. Whew! what a relief!
Once it was down, I went back upstairs to put the window back in and found that DERBY WAS CHEWING THROUGH THE ROPE.
Once again, he leaves me speechless……

I pruned the fruit trees a week ago.
Some of them were budding, so I put them in water and now they are starting to bloom.

Child’s Chair and step stool, originally uploaded by A. Drauglis Furnituremaker.
This was about the best picture of this project that I could get.
The step flips up to become a seat back.
We had a similar thing in out house growing up. It was kept in the upstairs bathroom and was good for reaching the sink, upper shelves, etc.
Since becoming a mother, my sister Ella had been hinting that she wanted something like that for her own child.
Of course, since Lara, my other sister, also had a toddler, there was no way that I could get away with making one.
I managed to get these together, finished, and packed up in time for Christmas, 2006, but had to ship them before the new camera came in (hence the poor photos)

Front View, open, originally uploaded by A. Drauglis Furnituremaker.
The choice of materials was based upon the area in which the Congregation lives. Just north of the Sandy Spring is a 300-year old Ash tree; a “giant of the forest” just down Meeting House Road. The Sycamore was chosen at first for the iridescent quality that it can take on when sawn and finished properly. The intention is to evoke any number of passages in the Scroll; as light glints off of the flecks in the wood one may think of the burning bush, “Let there be Light”, or the light and guidance that the Word of GD provides.
The door panels are cut in the traditional tablet shape – I do not think that any explanation is needed there. The inside back is covered with “bricks” of Sycamore intended to remind the viewer of the Western Wall.
Additionally, American Sycamore grows abundantly in this region. Given the Sycamore’s propensity for becoming immense and frequently hollow trees, they have been used as landmarks and as shelter for natives, colonists, and slaves fleeing from bondage.
