A hanging cabinet just the right size for storing spices, compact discs or anything else you like.  After doing a commission for a physicist from New Mexico, I was left with images of Southwestern architecture stuck in my head.

I worked those images into this rocket-shaped cabinet with vaguely mission-esque styling.

The door and case are made of Quartersawn Ash, the door panel and accents are Padauk – that is it’s natural color, a deep red streaked with bits of brown, black and orange.

Can stand freely on a table or desk, or hang on a wall using the keyhole hangers installed on the back (see photos)

Apparently, before retiring to his new home in the Blue Ridge, the Dog of Monster Cabinet sired this handsome lad. While the identity of the mother remains a mystery, it is readily evident that she was part-Dalmatian, part-Cujo. Pup of Monster Cabinet is a fearsome yet oddly cute piece that can’t wait to sit patiently next to your favorite chair, one ear supporting your drink. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “ankle-biter”.

Mostly housebroken, guaranteed to stay off the couch.

Pup’s Pedigree

The third in the Monster Cabinet series, Pup of Monster Cabinet is a truly functional work of art. Not only does the mouth open to reveal cabinet space, but also the side opens to reveal more cabinet space.  Just look out for Pup’s “plumbing.”  The eyes are drawer pulls that reveal a spacious drawer.  The ears are actual drop-leaves that lock into place for additional table-top space.

A simple end or side table with a Purpleheart wood top and  Maple legs and framing.  Also ideal for use as a display pedestal or stand. The top is made from a South American wood, Purpleheart, which is naturally a reddish purple – it has not been stained.  The natural color shifts tone  in the light, as you can see in the images in the Purple Dean Photo Gallery.

The top is “pillowed” slightly above the framing and has gaps all the way around to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction.

This table is part of the “Dean” End Table Series.  The first time I do a design, I often name it after a customer.  Then later variations will continue to carry that name.  ”Purple Dean” is a variation on a commission I did a while back and have continued to explore over time.

Second in the Modern Split Rail series of chairs. Sturdy pieces of a Black Cherry tree are offset visually by a single floating chair arm, a twig seat, and forelegs with beveled ends. The Cherry came from my neighbor’s house – thirty-five feet from source to shop. The peach, apple, apricot, and plum branches came from my fruit trees and others in Washington.

I find one of the most satisfying parts of woodworking is the planning. I love sketching, designing, making small models, and working drawings; it gives me control of the subject and provides a base to go back to when problems arise.

For this piece I abandoned that process entirely.

I took four pieces of Black Walnut from a friend’s  farm and left them on my porch with little idea of what they would become. The pieces were debris from land clearing; split from the main trunks of trees by a bulldozer.

It appeared at first that they would become part of a new handrail and banister for my own home. When I stood one of the pieces up, I realized that it had the perfect shape for a chair back. I played around with the pieces some more and realized that all of them could conceivably become a chair.

I saw a ladder-back chair with a seat made of some sort of webbing.  Once I started cutting I went from four legs to three, and bent Cherry side rail become Walnut. The seat became solid, then flat, and then a gently concave row of Apple and Peach twigs from my garden.

It was a different, more intuitive and organic process for me. I believe that this is shown in the work’s  sculptural lines and naturalistic feel.

The extraordinary piece of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) crotch came from a small operation in Webster City, Iowa. The case wood is Black Cherry (Prunus serotina ) with a Wild Apple (Malus spp.) back from the Coldwell Family in Salineville, Ohio. The Cherry drawer stock was cut and milled by a man in Bryant Pond, Maine. The drawer bottoms are flat cut amber Plyboo bamboo plywood. Finished with a Tung oil/varnish mix.

One-of-a kind functional art cork board made of used wine corks (all natural, no synthetics) with champagne corks spaced evenly along the outer rim. The corks are arranged in a radial pattern with split corks filling in where needed.  A cherry hoop painted red with milk paint forms the outside and the corks are sealed with garnet shellac.

Something round needs something interesting in the middle; a focal point which will help it be complete. In this case that focus is a freakishly-grinning bottle cap from a bottle of Schmaltz Brewing Co. Coney Island Lager series.

One of the larger live-edge shelves.  A shelf/wall hanging made from five pieces of rustic Sycamore lumber.

The surfaces are finished, but some of their defects were left intact and the edges have been left as they were – a combination of a wavy, natural edges, bark and marks from the sawyer.

Hangs on the wall via three keyhole hangers in the back – they hook unto screws driven into the wall.
