My 100-year-old house was built with a slate roof. I know this because as I cleaned up the yard and garden, I kept finding pieces of slate roofing tile*.
A few of the pieces were large enough to be useful. I cleaned them thoroughly with soap and water, then squared them up with a tile saw.
Slate makes great trivets, servers, cheeseboards, sushi trays, etc. or as a base for a crafting project. I have left this one unfinished and unpadded.
*(if you have a slate roof, don’t ever let anyone talk you into replacing it; find someone to repair it. A slate roof lasts at least five times as long as those standard asphalt shingles. )
