The name is meant to reflect the retro 1950s style
of the table. During the 1950s everything that was modern
and slick was called "atomic." Atomic power was
considered to be the wave of the future. So I present to
you "The Atomic Table," a retro coffee table made from
Maple with a pickled finish and a glass top.
The Atomic Coffee Table, 2005
Originally Commission for Private Collection
The idea for this design was a brought to me by the client.
He had a a very strong idea about what he wanted, and together we
made it a reality for him and for you. There were several
challenges that this piece presented.
Challenge One: The Style
The style is very different from my own, and forced me to really
stretch myself artistically.
Challenge Two: The Glass Top
The glass top had to carefully created and the client requested
that it be permanently affixed to the top. We did an in-home
viewing of the piece before I permanently attached the piece.
Once it was done, there was no going back.
Challenge Three: The Pickling Finish
This finish was another request from the client. It worked
beautifully with the other furnishings in the home, but the design
had to actually be modified slightly along the way, due to the naturally
inconsistent nature of this style of finish.
The Results:
In the end the client was quite pleased with the final product.
It created a great focal point in the living room, and fit it perfectly
with the surrounding furniture and decorating style.
