The Salty Oak Story
In searching for some unique wood to feature in a piece of furniture
I came across "Historic Trestlewood"; Douglas Fir that
was once part of a railroad trestle in Utah. I usually consider
Fir to be a rather bland wood and had never thought about using
in my work. But this Fir was different.
It was part of the
Lucin Cutoff Railroad, a wooden causeway that ran across an
arm of the Great Salt Lake. It was built a hundred years ago and
abandoned in 1959 after an earth and gravel route was laid right
next to it. The abandonment left tens of millions of board feet
of Fir and Redwood just sitting there, wasting away.
Fortunately, someone started to salvage all of that valuable lumber
(they are still at it). One of the companies doing the salvage work
discovered that the Fir pilings holding up the railroad had become
streaked and stained with all sorts of color not normally associated
with this wood; black and purple, and red and green, yellow here,
orange there... It is this wood which has been used to create this
series.

In-home Showing Available
When I saw the alluring figure in this piece of African Mahogany,
I had to have it. It was leaning up against the sales counter at
a lumberyard, begging to go home with someone. I trimmed, worked
and beveled it before carefully slicing it in half. The stands are
made of White Oak with reclaimed Douglas Fir panels and doors, and
Mahogany trim.
